Artist Statement

I was born in 1966 in Tbilisi, the capital of the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. My mother was a professional artist, and I was enchanted by the colors of oil paint from my very childhood. I spent long hours sitting beside my mother's easel, pouring my childish, colorful fantasies onto paper. It was a mythical, fairy-tale world to me. My earliest painted works, full of light-hearted simplicity and joy, remain vivid in my memory, far removed from the burdens and depressions of the world. All my emotions were translated into colors and woven into the ancient tapestry of human history. These paintings were imprinted with boundless freedom, and I often recall the words of the great artist Pablo Picasso: "It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child."

Then came my formal art education - four years in Art College followed by another four years at the Institute, specializing in the Art Faculty, where I earned my Bachelor's Degree. Those years were dedicated to immersing myself in the works of artistic geniuses from Pompeii mosaics to the likes of Giotto and Botticelli, from the Renaissance to the boundless world of Modern Art, which sometimes delves into explicit delusions.

In the early 1990s, I delved into Iconography, exploring the artistic products of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) period. What captivated me in this rich layer of human culture was its unrealistic vision of the Universe. The art of the Byzantine East, characterized by its static, otherworldly, passionless, and 2D, reversed-perspective space, contrasts greatly with the realism of Europe's Renaissance art after the 13th century. Iconography is both a unique product of Eastern Church mystical experience and a comprehensive masterpiece of Fine Arts. Fortunately, Georgia, the country I call home, boasts a rich heritage of early medieval Iconographic Art Pieces.

My career is composed of two main, independent branches: Iconography and Contemporary Art. Over the years, I've created thousands of icons in various sizes and compositions, and this experience has significantly influenced my approach to Modern Art. My style is characterized by rich coloring, simplified lines and shapes, all serving the main goal: to evoke a positive pulse, a light-hearted mood, and the sense of childlike, dispassionate curiosity and simplicity. These two branches of my career continuously enrich each other, with seemingly insignificant life events and moments fueling my imagination and inspiring new creative ideas.
